Sailing Quotes:
Message from Paul Mare, race skipper: PG Glass Majimoto

From where I was sitting the results over the line were as follows:

1 Reichel Pugh,
2 Wallbanger
3. PG Glass Majimoto.

We would have been clear ahead of Wallbanger over the line had we not had a poor position at the start . Sorry, but I listened to the wrong advice (To tack onto port too early) going down the start line. It would have been a better option to sail the middle of the line on Starboard (putting a whole lot of port boats "about" in the process) and enjoying the same clear air Wallbanger had upwind from the line. The result was that that (expletive deleted) little J27 compromised us horribly, luffing us up for too long. Aaaaagh! :x

The boat certainly feels very fast.

I went home to take a few double whiskeys to dose the 'flu I am fending off, so missed the sherry, soup and rolls. Was it a happy outcome?

Cheers Paul

They lied to us!
07.24.04 (10:17 pm)   [edit]
Excellent sailing conditions yesterday - timing perfect as one front moved over and the next lurked on the horizon. Above us blue sky and wind conditions pretty consistant after a flukey first spinnaker leg. PG Glass Majimoto was the fastest yacht on the water behind the newly launched carbon fibre REICHEL-PUGH 37 - but our results where diasppointing - Traffic and a luffing battle with slower traffic on the way to the first downwind mark put paid to any thought of being in the money. handicap results still to be confirmed but finished 4th over the line. Fantastic days sailing ...

Take a look at the pic: Are we absolutely sure we want to go sailing?
07.23.04 (2:39 pm)   [edit]
:? Wind - 30-40 clicks, Max temp 14 degrees C and 80% chance of rain ....

Our destiny beckons...
07.22.04 (3:14 am)   [edit]
I wish that the forecast for Saturday were anything like the marvellous sailing conditions we had last weekend but, alas, it isn't.
But that does not deter us, does it? A bit of raIn is not going to turn us away from our destiny, I hear you all shout in chorus.
So 13h00 at M it is for the winter sail of a lifetime!
See you then.

Lindsay

Oh no - No Wind ... or was there? see pics here
07.18.04 (8:20 am)   [edit]

Mutters around the club were that the lack of wind would cause the race to be cancelled. The disappointment was palpable. Today was going to be our first race after the extensive (and expensive) refit and to have the event cancelled was bad news.

Consensus was that we would take our pristine new PG Glass Majimoto out anyway - even if we were forced to motor around. We got the main up as soon as we cleared the Marina and followed a few promising ripples on the water. What we found out in the bay brought a smile to Lindsays face. As near perfect winter sailing conditions as it could get. We quickly hoisted the No.1 Genoa and killed the diesel.

You can see by the elation on Andrew M's face that the boys were itching to go sailing

We practised spinnaker hoists and gybes and the spotless PG Glass Majimoto certainly felt very fast on the water. The good news too, was that the new anti-slip deck coating, whilst not the prettiest, certainly seemed 'grippy' enough, even with the yacht on her ear and the crew working on the low side all managed to stay on board. Lets see what happens in 40 Knots with white water breaking over the deck :?

Hi everyone,
Weather for tomorrows racing looks like a light westerly, but fine and
sunny. Plenty of whales lolling about in the Bay at the moment as well, so
please keep a good lookout. The Galley will be up and running bright and
early for those rugby fans who would like to come down and enjoy breakfast.
All the rugby will be shown on the big screen in the Main Hall - 9.30am NZ
vs. Aus and at 11.35 the Springboks take on the Pacific Islanders, so take
advantage of the SAB promotion in the bars and stand a chance to win big
with the Guess the Score competition. The Galley are offering a set 3 course
dinner until the end of August at R95.00 per person, so please book to avoid
disappointment. Complimentary soup and rolls for competitors after racing,
the braai fires will be going for boerie rolls etc as well as the regular
Terrace meals. Don't forget that Nick Leggatt will be giving his talk on the
Cheyenne world speed record on Wednesday 21st July in the Main Hall, please
try to come down for that. Carol Middleton has asked me to see if there is a
photographer among all of you who would like to come down and take photies
for the Lion of Africa Women's Day Race on August 7th. It's a great day both
on and off the water, so please contact myself or Carol if you would be
willing to offer your services. Have a great weekend, see you on the water.

Message from an (exhausted) Lindsay

Finally the mast will, dv, be stepped tomorrow at 11h00!! Then we need to install all the blocks and other fittings most of which I hope to do tomorrow so, with a bit of luck, we should be able to race on Saturday.
I am also planning to take M out of the water at 09h30 before the mast stepping to clean the hull.
This is a good-news-day what with AndrewT's wonderful news.
Rugby starts at 11h35 on Saturday so a 14h30 race start is fine.
Please let me know about Saturday- I know Ceri is away but hope all others can make it.
I would like someone to meet me at 09h00 on Saturday to sort out the sails etc- pse advise who is available.

Back in business! PG Glass Majimoto racing this Saturday
07.15.04 (11:09 am)   [edit]
The incredible amount of work that Lindsay and Dave have put into the refit has at last come to a close. Sparcraft should have the stick back in by the time you read this, and we are ready to race this Saturday - I think we have missed two rounds of the Winter Series - so have NO points on the log yet.

More news is that Andrew T will NOT be leaving us - He has managed to secure a position in Cape Town and so will be sharing many more hours on the rail gently chiding crew into action ... "Call that a lull ...?"

Our Ceri is away visiting the UK and will be missed - and hopefully following our fortunes on the weblog ... See you soon Ceri! Love to Mom...

THANK YOU LINDSAY & DAVE - NEW PICS
07.07.04 (8:28 pm)   [edit]
Hi all

Nearly there. The refurb of the mast is complete and the deck paint job
nearly complete. (Lindsay, I had a look look last night in the dark (8
p.m.), but could not discern if the unevenness of the finish had been
dealt with?)

The new finish is a "pearl grey" which has a blueishness to it
-different. Colour can't be clearly in the attached picture - will take
my Canon digital with for a better image today

Next will be a "brush" spray job by Action Yachting on the white parts
of the deck after which the mast can be stepped.

Saturday? Maybe!

Lindsay has been at it solidly. In attendance all of the time while the
paint job is being done and the on top of it even providing food,
refreshments and transport for the workers. A mission! Thanks Lindsay!

Thanks to Dave too for input and advice. Lindsay and Dave are working on
a very inventive scheme to cure the "garage" water ingress problem.

Cheers, Paul

Not so pretty pictures ... but they will get better ...

Update on PG Glass Majimoto's 'refit'
07.02.04 (9:53 am)   [edit]
The deck is currently very black. It's rough - to the eye and to the touch - But a visit from the paint supplier and the work continues ... under his assurance that once the primer has been sanded down and the (much lighter colour) grey anti-slip is applied and also sanded down, we should arrive at a satisfactory result. We'll see.

I had a meeting with Carl Raikes of PG Glass and have discussed schedules and calendar for when racing resumes - hopefully in the next week or so, and this site will again be updated regularly with pics and stories. The new windows look amazing - and in spite of all the rain PG Glass Majimoto is leak free ...

Time to tuck in to a glass of red and cuddle up in front of the fire this weekend - it's going to be freezing cold ...
